"Those of us who work with children want them to realise that although they may learn differently, each one of them can and will learn to read. It is our job, not theirs, to find out how best to teach them."
Maryanne Wolf, Proust and the Squid (2008)
Helping children who learn differently means teaching differently. Which is where we come in. At every level our courses, awards and qualifications enable teachers to think differently about learning, and support every pupil they have.
At Helen Arkell we are extremely experienced at delivering high quality, professional training courses. Whatever the level of previous experience, we have the right course for you.

Benefits of coming to Helen Arkell for your professional training
We have a reputation and proven track record of being at the forefront of specialist teacher training.
Helen Arkell has particular strengths in training specialist teachers how to look at each person’s needs individually and teach in a multi-sensory way.
We are the oldest dyslexia centre in the UK and have a long history of providing training. Helen Arkell were involved in the development and delivery of the first professionally recognised courses in the country.
Helen Arkell offers a unique approach in the organisation of the teaching practices on the Helen Arkell Level 5 and Level 7 courses. Candidates are allocated pupils in state schools that are local to the Centre and supervised each week by their tutors. This ensures that each candidate is given ongoing feedback to continuously develop their skills, unlike other Centres who may observe their candidates on only a couple of occasions. There may also be the opportunity to watch others teaching. Past candidates’ evaluations of our courses have deemed this ‘hands-on’ approach to have been particularly helpful as they carry out their teaching practices.
There is a generous ratio of tutors to students on the Level 5 and Level 7 courses.
Our tutor teams comprise experienced professionals who all contribute to the lecture programme. Outside speakers are also invited regularly. Past candidates’ course evaluations deem this variety of input a real strength of the Centre.
Students have access to other training offered by the Centre and appreciate the Saturday morning conferences where they have the opportunity to hear renowned speakers in the world of SEN.
The Level 5 and 7 professional courses are nationally recognised and allow some graduates to apply for ATS/APS/AMBDA/APC on completion of the relevant course.
CPD is available after the completion of a relevant course to enable students to maintain their professional knowledge, skills and understanding, or teaching/assessment practising certificates.
Due to our ‘gold star’ reputation, many schools approach us when they have SEN vacancies as they value the high quality of the training at Helen Arkell.
We advertise SEN Job Vacancies on our website on behalf of schools and other organisations. Helen Arkell graduates are considered to be of the highest calibre and often requested by schools.
"Just to let you know that I was offered and accepted the job that was advertised through Helen Arkell. I had to teach a 20 minute lesson. At the end of the session the SENCo was very complimentary and commented that it was 'very Helen Arkell!' I got the job!”
“Helen Arkell has an impressive reputation in my workplace and I’m sure this is partly why I have been promoted and hired as a Specialist Teacher.” CH
One candidate summarised her reasons for applying for our Level 5 course as follows:
"The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre is known worldwide as a centre of excellence as well as having a reputation for being forward thinking. I would like to learn and develop in an environment which is considered by OCR External Verifiers as one of the 'gold standard' centres. In addition, your course has come highly recommended via colleagues and various schools in the area with large SENCO departments."
