  • This course is relevant to, and will be attended by, both educational professionals and parents/carers.
  • This course is based greatly on Fin’s ODD and PDA workshop.

This presentation will outline a range of adaptive approaches to support the behaviour and learning needs of children and young people. We will consider a range of systems and strategies in order support disaffected, demanding and defiant learners.

Topics covered in this session will include:

  • Understanding the risk factors for learning and behaviour issues: Understanding the behaviour message and learning needs in children and young people.
  • Mood and motivation: Considering a range of techniques to support proactive mood and motivation through assertive and adaptive strategies
  • Supporting a range of demanding behaviours: Dealing with distractibility, inflexibility, insatiability, defiance, lying, swearing. anger and aggression.
  • Socialisation and friendships: Consideration of how best to deal with peer to peer and sibling interaction.
  • Schools and parents working in partnership: Supporting behaviour in terms of effective communication and collaboration between home and the school
  • Role Models, Resilience and Wellbeing: Practicing what you preach. The 7 Cs of Resilience and looking after you in order to look after them.

Fintan O’Regan, BSc, PGCE, MA

Fintan was the headteacher of the Centre Academy from 1996 to 2002, which was the first specialist school in the UK for students between the ages of 7 and 19 specialising in issues related to ADHD, ASC, ODD and PDA.

He is an associate lecturer for Leicester University, Michigan University, the National Association of Special Needs, the Institute of Education, the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity and is a member of the council of CReSTeD and the Special Educational Needs Consortium.

He has written a number of books and published articles and works as a trainer and consultant both nationally and internationally with regard to supporting schools, children and families with SEND and behaviour issues.
