Description
– This is a 1 hour recorded session available on demand –
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a lifelong challenge with talking and understanding words. DLD affects around two children in every classroom, yet it remains one of the most under-recognised and misunderstood neurodevelopmental conditions. It also often co-occurs with other conditions, including dyslexia. In this session, Amy will explore what DLD is, how it can present, why it so often goes unnoticed, and how to support children with DLD.
Drawing on real-life examples and the voices of young people with lived experience, Amy will highlight the impact of DLD on learning, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing. She will also share practical strategies for identifying and supporting children and young people with DLD. This session is ideal for teachers, specialist teachers, assessors, and parents/carers who want to deepen their understanding of DLD and feel more confident in identifying and supporting children with speech and language challenges.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand what Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is
- Know about the co-occurrence of DLD with some other conditions, including dyslexia
- Recognise some key signs of possible DLD in children
- Learn some practical ways to support children with DLD.
