Reasonable adjustments

Reasonable adjustments are the steps that can be taken to help the dyslexic adult gain the most from his or her strengths and their ability to think differently, whilst helping to minimise the areas of difficulty.
Sometimes the simplest changes can make the greatest difference.

Reasonable adjustments will vary according to the individual adult’s needs, his or her job role, or course of study and the environment. The reasonable adjustments should not compromise the essential requirements of the job role, nor should they place undue financial burden on the employer.
Because reasonable adjustments vary according to individual need it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of examples. It is essential that advice be sought from a specialist to ensure that appropriate reasonable adjustments are recommended.
Implementing reasonable adjustments can sometimes take time depending on the nature of the adult’s dyslexia, job specification and environment. They work best alongside the development of skills and strategies and the individual will need time to practise these, as well as adjust to new working practices. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that improvements in performance will also take time.
The following examples are provided to show you a few of the different types of reasonable adjustment that might be considered within the context of the workplace:

Workplace

  • Environment – location of desk in an area that is likely to provide the minimum visual and auditory distractions. Fixed desk location as opposed to ‘hot desking’
  • Providing written backup such as an e-mail for verbal information or instructions
  • Offering the adult the opportunity not to take notes during meetings
  • Providing explicit feedback on work completed

How can technology help?

Technology today provides a great resource and when used effectively can make a significant difference to your employee’s work performance. This might involve specialist software programs but it may also mean taking a new approach to software already available within the workplace.
It is also important to remember that the use of new technology will require your employee to learn new skills and therefore it is essential that they be provided with the time to do so. Many adults that experience dyslexia will need time to practise new procedures and skills so that they become automatic and fluent. It is only at this stage that they will gain the maximum benefit from the technology.
Technology provides the greatest help when used alongside skills and strategies developed through work-based skills development. This can be achieved by ensuring that the specialist trainer is experienced in working with dyslexic adults within the context of a work environment and that they are also familiar with the use of technology.
Our specialist trainers can provide skills development training, specifically tailored to your employee’s needs and also the requirements of their job role.
