Studies estimate that 30% to 80% of autistic individuals may also meet the criteria for ADHD, and that around 20% to 50% of individuals with ADHD meet the criteria for autism.
Having both autism and ADHD creates a unique experience with overlapping challenges and strengths, which can significantly affect diagnosis, quality of life, and daily functioning.
Both conditions influence executive functioning, emotional regulation, social skills, and sensory processing in distinct yet interconnected ways.
Areas to be addressed in the session include
- Autism and ADHD explored and explained
- The Intersection of Autism and ADHD, Overlap and interplay
- Supporting Executive dysfunction, Emotional regulation, Sensory sensitivities, and social challenges:
- Specific strategies for Inflexibility, Inattention, Impulsivity, Insatiability, Frustration and Defiance
- Working in partnership with parents and carers
- Transition, Wellbeing and Resilience
- The potential role of medication
Fintan O’Regan, BSc, PGCE, MA
Fintan was the headteacher of the Centre Academy from 1996 to 2002, which was the first specialist school in the UK for students between the ages of 7 and 19 specialising in issues related to ADHD, ASC, ODD and PDA.
He is an associate lecturer for Leicester University, Michigan University, the National Association of Special Needs, the Institute of Education, the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre and is a member of the council of CReSTeD and the Special Educational Needs Consortium.
He has written a number of books and published articles and works as trainer and consultant both nationally and internationally with regards to supporting schools, children and families with SEND and behaviour issues.
