Description
Our own Claire Harvey, Head of Education, will be giving an online talk entitled There is more than one way to read a book – for learners with dyslexia.
This talk will touch on some of the reasons why many learners with dyslexia and related specific learning difficulties struggle with reading, potentially becoming reluctant readers and why reading matters so much. Most importantly, this talk will provide attendees with simple, practical strategies, activities and resources to help improve the reading development of a weaker reader and encourage even the most reluctant reader to re-engage with the wonderful world of reading.
This talk lasts around an hour.
About Claire Harvey
Claire is Head of Education at Helen Arkell. She trained at the Centre (OCR Levels 3, 5, and 7) and has worked previously in a large primary school as SEN Team Leader. She was responsible for assessing mainstream pupils, identifying those in need of additional support, allocating them to appropriate intervention groups, teaching the weakest learners herself, and closely monitoring all pupils’ progress.
Claire’s work as a specialist teacher and assessor, along with seeing the significant difference that specialist support made to her own dyslexic son’s academic journey and self-esteem, has confirmed her commitment to making a real difference to the lives of learners with SpLD.
Since 2017, Claire has worked at Helen Arkell as a tutor and lecturer on the Level 5 Diploma course, as a specialist assessor, delivered numerous in-service presentations to schools and organisations, and delivered the renowned Parents’ HELP course.
