Description
– This is a 1 hour recorded session available on demand –
What makes someone want to keep reading a book? Are people with dyslexia less motivated to read? In my deep dive on reading motivation, I will discuss the following topics:
- What actually motivates people to read and why it’s worth their time.
- The shortcomings of how we currently measure reading motivation, particularly for individuals with dyslexia.
- My new dyslexia research offers a more nuanced understanding of reading motivation.
- Innovative approaches to measuring reading motivation, considering factors such as time and effort.
- Ongoing research in the N-CoDe Lab and its potential to enhance our understanding of reading motivation, ultimately enabling more effective interventions.
This conversation promises to provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and anyone interested in the dynamics of reading motivation. It’s a chance to rethink how we approach reading motivation and to ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy of books!
Hannah Jones is a PhD researcher and Graduate Demonstrator at UCL. They are interested in why some children struggle to learn to read and how we can better support children’s reading. Even from a young age with a dyslexia diagnosis, Hannah consumed every book within their reach (even when they couldn’t read). It follows that they are doing a PhD on reading motivation, trying to understand what might make reading for pleasure accessible to all. Hannah is a member of the N-CoDe Lab, and you can find out more about their work on the lab website (www.ncodelab.com).
