Celebrating Inclusive Culinary Creativity: Helen Arkell attends the launch of ‘Deliciously Dyslexic’

Last week we were thrilled to attend the launch of  Deliciously Dyslexic, a truly inspiring new cookbook by the talented by baldchefnick.

Designed with accessibility at its heart, this culinary gem is a game-changer for anyone who finds traditional cookbooks hard to navigate.

In the Great Kitchen at The Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Nick and fellow supporters welcomed staff from Helen Arkell to the launch which included some tasty nibbles and drinks, all from recipes inspired from the book. Following a very successful fundraising raffle on the night, we are pleased to say we have raised nearly £900 for Helen Arkell.

If you’re looking to support inclusive design and delicious food, this is one you won’t want to miss, and we think it makes an excellent birthday or Christmas present for all readers!

Deliciously Dyslexic is available to purchase from Amazon and all main bookstores.

Morph Mastery Course: Practical Tools for Supporting Dyslexic Learners

Join Louise Selby at Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity on Monday 29th September for a Morph Mastery training course – a hands-on opportunity to explore effective ways of teaching spelling, reading and vocabulary through morphology.

Based on research, this course introduces ten adaptable strategies ideal for learners with dyslexia and specific learning difficulties. Designed for ages 9–13 (but easily extended to other age groups), the approach is structured, multi-sensory and flexible enough for classroom, group or one-to-one teaching.

Spaces are limited; book early to secure your place.

To book please visit Louise’s webpage here.

About this Course

Morph Mastery is both an intervention and a resource book offering practical ways to teach spelling, reading and vocabulary using morphology (the system of language based on prefixes, suffixes and roots). It is based on research into what works for learners with specific learning difficulties and dyslexia. It’s multi-sensory, structured and can be adapted and personalised. The intervention is aimed for ages 9 – 13 but the strategies can be used with a wider age range in groups and class.

This is a practical course in which you learn ten key strategies in Morph Mastery which you’ll be able to adapt to your setting, whether it is whole class teaching, group work, or 1:1.

Date: Monday 29th Sept 9:30 – 3:30
Cost: £125 per person

Seen the Unseen: Celebrating Dyslexia Through Ceramics

A powerful new ceramic installation celebrating the achievements and lived experiences of people with dyslexia is now on display at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity in Farnham. The artwork, titled Seen the Unseen, is the culmination of a collaborative October Half Term project led by UCA Surrey Galleries, in association with Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity and ceramic specialists 318 Ceramics.

Funded by Farnham Town Council’s holiday grants scheme, the project brought together local families, students, and friends for a week of creative workshops from 28 October to 1 November 2024. Over the course of five sessions held at UCA, Helen Arkell, and 318 Ceramics, participants crafted a series of colourful clay discs, each textured with personal marks and imprinted with the names and occupations of people with dyslexia. These people ranged from famous individuals to people who attended the workshop and even their friends and family.

Some discs were intentionally left blank, representing the many individuals whose dyslexia remains undiagnosed or hidden. The final wall-hung artwork is both vibrant and thought-provoking, sparking conversations about the visibility of invisible differences.

Hazel Radnor, Head of Fundraising at Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, said:
“This beautiful piece is not only a celebration of creativity but also a meaningful statement about recognition, inclusion, and pride in difference. We’re thrilled to host it and deeply grateful to our partners and the Farnham community.”

The installation was unveiled with a visit from the Mayor of Farnham, who joined representatives from UCA, 318 Ceramics, and the Helen Arkell team to mark the occasion.

Workshop facilitators Kathy Mason and Sian Van Driel from 318 Ceramics brought expert guidance and encouragement throughout the sessions, ensuring each piece was both meaningful and beautifully crafted.
