According to recent research commissioned for the charity National Numeracy and published in May 2024, 3,000 UK adults associate numeracy with feelings of fear or anxiety while almost a third (29 per cent) say they actively try to avoid anything involving numbers and data. These negative associations can be a barrier when it comes to supporting children with maths. This in turn can lower children’s confidence in their ability to master maths and so the negative cycle continues.
Drawing on her own experiences as a learner who struggled with maths at school and then as a teacher supporting children with their numeracy, Anita’s presentation will take a brief look at what can make maths feel ‘scary’ and then cover some practical ways to build confidence and make maths learning fun and more accessible. This course aims to provide parents and educational professionals, including specialist teachers with some creative ways to support children with maths.
In this session, Anita will cover:
- Multisensory maths – playing with numbers using concrete props, pictures and patterns
- Maths notation – understanding maths ‘grammar’
- Maths language – making it meaningful
- Fun ways to learn maths facts so they stick (e.g., number bonds, times tables)
- Real life application – more than just procedural steps
- Working backwards – why is this the answer?
This session is presented by Anita Haigh, an experienced dyslexia specialist working at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity. Anita works as a consultant for parents and as a specialist assessor. She delivers in-service training sessions and parent workshops for schools. She has also lectured and tutored on the Level 5 and Level 7 Diploma training courses for Specialist teachers and assessors.
