Football Fun at Farnham Youth FC!

Soaking up the evening sun, the fundraising team from Helen Arkell went along to support Farnham Youth FC coaches’ charity match last Friday at The Memorial Ground.

The crowd, mainly young players eager to see their own coaches play, filled the stadium as play kicked off at 7pm.

Families and supporters cheered as goals were scored, in aid of Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

Our thanks to everyone who came along to the evening and well done to all the coaches who played so well!

It was truly a “match” made in heaven that scored big for both wonderful charities!

The Big Walk for Dyslexia

Bring your teddy and enjoy a fun family walk through Farnham Park, ending with a Teddy Bears’ Tea at our Centre. Great fun for families, dogs, and all ages!

Annual Charity Golf Day 2025

We were thrilled to be back at Worplesdon Golf Club on Thursday 8 May for the charity’s Annual Golf Day.

Organised with the help of supporter, Sue Stradling, and her son Ewan, the competition has been held in aid of the charity for over 30 years.

The weather was kind to us as the players headed out onto the stunning Worplesdon Golf Course to play 18 holes of four ball better ball.

The competition was followed by a delicious buffet lunch after which prizes were awarded and Andy Cook, CEO of Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, gave a short speech.

We were thrilled to be joined by members of the Arkell family and many congratulations go to Charlie Gotke (Helen Arkell’s great grandson) and Jamie Bourne who won the competition, taking home the silver salver.

Huge thanks to all the players for taking part and for their many generous donations. The day raised a fantastic £8,800 which will enable us to support many more children, young people and adults with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Thank you so much for helping us to achieve this.

Congratulations to our London Marathon team!

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing London Marathon 2025 runners!

Our incredible team of six conquered 26.2 miles, showing true grit, passion and determination every step of the way.

It was an uncomfortably hot, sunny day and we are totally in awe of their incredible achievement. It takes months of training though the winter months and is a huge commitment – we can’t thank Becky, Susie, Arthur, Matt, Katie and Emily enough!

As a team they have already raised over £16,000 and their efforts will make a real difference, helping children and adults with dyslexia get the vital support they need through Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity.

Level 5 and Level 7 Diplomas in Teaching Learners with Dyslexia/SpLDs and Teaching and Assessing Learners with Dyslexia/SpLDS

Join our Level 5 and Level 7 courses!

At Helen Arkell we have been successfully delivering the Level 5 and Level 7 Diploma courses for many years. Our next courses begin September 2025 and are running from the Centre in Farnham.

These are a nationally recognised qualifications and we have consistently been recognised by CPD External Verifiers as being one of the ‘gold standard’ centres for delivering these qualifications.

Our Level 5 and Level 7 courses are accredited by the CPD Standards Office and our Level 5 course is approved by Patoss (Professional Association for Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties).

We are unique in providing a very high proportion of tutor-to-candidate contact time to ensure that each candidate achieves to the very maximum of their ability.

The tutor group system at Helen Arkell encourages candidates to share their wealth of knowledge and experiences during their weekly contact with each other.

Please note that you do not need a university degree or to be a qualified teacher to attend our Level 5 course. Those looking to do Level 7 need to hold a Level 5 qualification.

Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary provides free training for schools

Thanks to the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary, launched in November 2023, an incredible 176 teachers and teaching assistants from UK state schools have already received free specialist training, enabling them to better support learners with dyslexia back in their classrooms.

The continuing generosity of Theo and Ryman Retail Limited means that we are able to offer even more teachers and teaching assistants from the state school sector free places on the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity’s six-week online Supporting Learners with Dyslexia course!

This practical course comprises six sessions on Fridays from 9.30 am, starting on 25 April 2025 and provides lots of useful, tried and tested strategies for supporting learners effectively. Recordings of each session are sent out after the live session for anyone who is unable to attend.

To apply for a bursary-funded place on this course, simply complete a short application form here.
