Our Royal Parks Heroes

Huge thanks to our magnificent Royal Parks Half Marathon runners!

They did an amazing job running on 8 October. It was a warm day which was lovely to hang around in but not so great for running. Between them, Ceri, Peter, James, Jackie and Daxa raised a fantastic £4,400 to help us support adults and children with dyslexia!

Launch of the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary

On behalf of all of us at Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, I am absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of a new partnership with TV Dragon, Retail Entrepreneur and longstanding dyslexia champion Theo Paphitis and Ryman Retail Limited.

Together we will launch the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary, giving us the opportunity to offer free training to teachers and teaching assistants from state schools around the UK.

Starting with 50 free training spaces, the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary will enable the state school sector to take part in the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity’s six-week online Supporting Learners with Dyslexia course, free of charge for teachers or teaching assistants.

The aim of the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary is to particularly support state schools where there are young people from low-income families, by giving them access to the expertise and guidance of Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity regarding the best ways to support young people with dyslexia.

Theo Paphitis said: “I am delighted to create the Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary, supported by one of our key partners, the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity. Many have a story with dyslexia, either through their own story or someone close to them, and through this Bursary and further work in the dyslexia area we want to make sure that as many stories as possible are positive ones.”

Helen Arkell’s aim is to remove barriers to learning, employment and life for more and more people with dyslexia, regardless of ability to pay, and we are indebted to Theo Paphitis and Ryman for helping us to achieve this.

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2023 – Join in!

2 to 8 October 2023

We are now counting down to Dyslexia Awareness Week. This is the week in the year where we go even further to help people understand what dyslexia is, that there is effective support available and to explain the up- and down-sides of having dyslexia. If you can join us, we would love it!

The theme of this year’s Dyslexia Awareness Week is Uniquely You.

Look out for posts on our social media pages and for ways you can get involved.

Could you help spread the word about dyslexia?

Celebrate what makes people with dyslexia unique.

We would really love you to share your own unique dyslexia story in the form of a short video, lasting no longer than one minute. Look out for others’ films during the week on our social media channels.

You can use your mobile phone and let our community know what makes you you!

Roy Brennan Golf Day

We were thrilled to be chosen to benefit from the 2023 Roy Brennan Charity Golf Day held on 18 May at Cranleigh Golf and Country Club.

Mr Roy Brennan has been running the golf day to raise money for worthy causes for an incredible 27 years.

This year the event, sponsored by Real English Drinks, were particularly excited to contribute to Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, as it has supported Charlie Howard with his dyslexia. Charlie is the son of Real English Drinks CEO, Douglas Howard.

Douglas said, ‘We are proud to be able to give back to the organisation and hope this money can help many other families, like it did ours.’

Thank you to Roy, Douglas and to everyone who enjoyed a golf day raising money for us!

Our Summer Appeal – meet Rosie

Rosie is seven and she is a child who was struggling to keep up with her classmates at school in reading and spelling. When she started to get anxious, Rosie’s mum Anna turned to us for help. After an assessment with Sandra who diagnosed dyslexia, Rosie started tuition to help her use her strengths to overcome the difficulties dyslexia entails. With this in place, and help from school, Rosie is loving learning again.

Rosie says, ‘When I realised that some things were more tricky for me and that I was dyslexic, Sandra’s way of teaching really helped me. I can use what she helps me with for my learning at school and at home.’

For Rosie’s family, none of this would be possible without bursary funding and we rely on donations to provide support for those in need of our help. Donating to Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity helps us provide life-changing services to those who find themselves in need of our help, including:

dyslexia consultations
assessments
tuition.

For example, £10 could help a parent or carer gain the knowledge and confidence they need to support their dyslexic child through school, via our popular parents’ HELP course;
£15 could help provide specialist training to teachers and teaching assistants to support a range of learners in state schools and colleges;
£20 could help fund a life-changing assessment for a child at Helen Arkell and equip them, like Rosie, with the knowledge they need to look forward with confidence.

Community Grant from Farnham Town Council

Huge thanks to our friends at Farnham Town Council for an amazing Community Grant of £1,000. This generous grant will help our work supporting children and adults with dyslexia in Farnham and the surrounding villages who might not otherwise be able to afford help.

Here’s our CEO Andy being presented with a suitably giant cheque by Alan Earwaker, Farnham’s Mayor and a great friend to the charity.

TCS London Marathon 2024

Join #TeamHelenArkell in the world-famous London Marathon – the largest fundraising event in the world!

The TCS London Marathon is one of the world’s most famous running events. The course follows an iconic route taking in many of London’s landmarks, from the Cutty Sark and the City to St James’ Park and The Mall – with the crowd cheering you on along the way.

Do something amazing! We need your help raising funds to support children, young people and adults who have dyslexia who need our help more than ever.

Annual Golf Day, 11 May 2023

We were thrilled to be back at Worplesdon Golf Club on Thursday 11 May for the charity’s Annual Golf Day.

Organised with the help of supporter, Sue Stradling, and her son Ewan, the competition has been held in aid of the charity for over 30 years.

The weather was much better than predicted as the players headed out onto the stunning Worplesdon Golf Course to play 18 holes of four ball better ball.

Worplesdon is one of the classic heathland Surrey courses which remains much as it was set out by J F Abercrombie in 1908.

The competition was followed by a delicious buffet lunch after which prizes were awarded and Andy Cook, CEO of Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, gave a short speech.

We were thrilled to be joined by David and Peter Arkell, sons of the charity’s founder as well as other members of the Arkell family.

Many congratulations go to David Chiltern and Terry Perkins who won the competition, taking home the silver salver.

Huge thanks to all the players for taking part and for their many generous donations. The day raised a fantastic £9,330 which will enable us to support many more children, young people and adults with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.

Thank you so much for helping us to achieve this.

Thank you to our amazing London Marathon 2023 team

A massive thank you to our 2023 London Marathon team, for going above and beyond for the cause of dyslexia, and for really making a difference in the world.

Six intrepid heroes signed up for the Helen Arkell team in this year’s London Marathon which took place on 23 April.

David, Debbie, Eskil, Justin, Sam and Steve all showed incredible determination to help us fulfil our mission to transform the lives of children and adults with dyslexia.

The months of intense training in order to manage the 26.2 miles in one piece involved running whatever the weather, on dark evenings after work and chilly early mornings.

On the day itself, the team all completed one of the greatest challenges there is, collecting their hard earned medals before celebrating with proud family and friends.

You can read their stories by clicking on their names below, and this will give you an insight into their own individual, personal reasons for putting their bodies on the line in this way.

And they would all be hugely grateful if you contribute a little something to their fundraising pages, because raising sponsorship can be as challenging as the running itself.
