Come along to our Christmas Drinks Evening

We would love to see you at our annual Christmas Drinks evening. Come and enjoy drinks and nibbles with our friends and colleagues and have a look around the Centre.

Join us at the Tes SEND Show 2023

Join us in October for the 2023 Tes SEND Show! Andy, Claire, Rachael and Katherine will be at Stand 83, amongst many SEND exhibitors.

There will be opportunities to take part in forums, workshops, CPD-certified seminars.

The exhibition is aimed at parents. carers and education professionals and entry is free (some seminars are chargeable).

New service for younger children – Literacy Learning Assessment

We are delighted to launch a new assessment service for children who are too young for a dyslexia diagnostic assessment.

Our Literacy Learning Assessment is aimed at children in Years 1 and 2 (and early into Year 3) who are working below the level of their peers and whose progress is giving cause for concern.

This new service offers a non-diagnostic assessment, by a Helen Arkell Specialist Teacher of reading, writing and spelling skills, as well as some cognitive processing, in order to identify strengths and areas of development, as well as recommendations to support teaching and learning. As a result, appropriate early intervention can be delivered, rather than children having to wait until they are old enough for a formal dyslexia assessment.

We are able to offer financial assistance for this service to families on lower incomes.

Vote for the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity this February in the My Favourite Voucher Codes Charity Poll

We are delighted to be taking part in My Favourite Voucher Codes monthly charity poll, where we are up for a chance to win 20% of their profits. As one of three charities taking part, we need your support!

My Favourite Voucher Codes isn’t your average voucher code website – not only do they help their users to save money whenever they shop online, they’re also passionate about helping good causes, donating 20% of their profits to charity every month.

With thousands of voucher codes and offers from the UK’s favourite merchants, their site gives users the opportunity to save money on groceries, fashion, tech, beauty, travel, insurance and loads more.

Every month, three charities take part in their poll to compete for votes by visitors to the site. At the end of the month, the charity with the most votes wins the donation.

How is the money raised?

The donation to the winning charity is formed by the amount of voucher codes used throughout the month. Every time someone makes a purchase through My Favourite Voucher Codes, the site makes a small commission, which is at no extra cost to the customer. In short, every time a customer shops through the site, they will be contributing to the donation prize, and of course, the more codes used, the bigger the donation.

How to support Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity

To be in with a chance of winning this donation, we need your votes. You can cast your vote for free from 1 February, and the poll will run up until midnight on 28 February.

You don’t need to register or sign up for anything to take part, and you don’t have to use any codes for your vote to count, so everyone can get involved!

If however you do need to do any online shopping, make sure you have a browse at the site’s offers, as chances are you’ll come across a voucher code to help you save money on your purchase. Not only that, but by making a purchase through the site you’ll also be contributing towards the donation we’re up for winning!

Lillian

Lillian is a busy girl; she loves dancing and is part of an invitation-only dance crew, she loves fashion, designing useful objects (rainbow toilet roll holder anyone?) and making animated movies. Her dad thinks her amazing problem-solving abilities could make her a great engineer one day.

Lillian goes to a very tiny school in Oxfordshire – there are just two other children in her year and they both seem particularly good at reading. This is something Lillian struggles with, as well as with spelling, organisation and remembering things at school, so she and her mum Kirstie came to see us here at Helen Arkell.

Lillian’s assessment was a revelation. She’s in the top 1% for two particular skills and this and the other feedback she was given have elevated her self-confidence enormously.

This gave Lillian the boost she needed so when World Book Day came around in March, Lillian set to work to educate everyone at school about dyslexia. She didn’t read in assembly and she didn’t write a report; Lillian wrote all her newly-discovered facts on her school shirt in multi-coloured pens!

Lillian received so many lovely comments and encouragement wearing her decorated shirt to school. One mum, whose son has dyslexia but who is not ready to let everyone know yet, told Lillian that she was very proud of her and that she’d made her son feel better about being dyslexic. The school thanked Lillian for being so brave and so open about her dyslexia. Thanks to Lillian, lots of people at school now understand dyslexia better and Lillian is really happy that they know about it.

Writing to us at Helen Arkell, Lillian’s mum said, ‘I just wanted to share my proud moment with you. Lillian’s diagnosis has brought her a great deal of comfort in why she struggles and has allowed her to identify areas that there are easy solutions too. She has embraced lots of coping mechanisms and is a much happier little girl – thank you.’

Big Walk for Dyslexia – Thank you!

Thank you to all those who joined us for our Big Walk for Dyslexia!

The day dawned sunny and warm and stayed that way for the walkers who enjoyed the gorgeous scenery around Frensham Little Pond.

On their return we had well-earned tea and cakes at the ready.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the walk and to our volunteers who helped make it happen.
