Neurodiversity workshops with expert Fintan O’Regan

Once again, we are are pleased to offer workshops with neurodiversity expert Fintan O’Regan. These will be useful to parents and teachers who have children with:

  • Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
  • Learning, behaviour and socialisation difference

 

  • Friday 10 November 2024, 1 to 4 pm – Fin O’Regan’s ASC and ADHD Workshop We are able to subsidise places on this course for lower-income families.
  • Friday 26 April 2024, 1 to 4 pm – ODD and PDA Workshop for Educators
  • Friday 3 May 2024, 1 to 4 pm – ODD and PDA Workshop for Parents We are able to subsidise places on this course for lower-income families.

All the courses will be held at The Museum of Farnham, 38 West Street, Farnham – just a few doors down from our Centre.

About Fintan O’Regan

Fintan was the Head Teacher of the Centre Academy from 1996 -2002, which was the first specialist school in the UK for students between the ages of 7-19 specialising in issues related to ADHD, ASC, ODD and PDA.

He is an associate lecturer for Leicester University, Michigan University, the National Association of Special Needs, the Institute of Education, the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity and is a member of the council of CReSTeD and the Special Educational Needs Consortium.

He has written a number of books and published articles and works as a trainer and consultant both nationally and internationally with regard to supporting schools, children and families with SEND and behaviour issues.

New service – parental coaching for children with anxiety

Children with dyslexia often experience anxiety. For a parent, this can be very stressful. Our new service is a one-to-one, tailored consultation between parents and our professional coaches. These coaches are registered with the Association for Coaching and with the British Psychology Society and they will provide expert support for you to become confident that you can support your child in overcoming anxiety and building self-esteem.

One of the greatest influences on children’s success in learning is the involvement of parents in their education. When a child has a specific learning difficulty like dyslexia, this involvement is even more crucial. Many children who find learning difficult can get frustrated and demotivated which may lead to low self-esteem.

The ‘Hints, Encouragement and Liaison for Parents’ course helps demystify dyslexia and gives practical ideas and strategies to help you support your child at home with their learning.

Join us at the Tes SEND Show 2023

Join us in October for the 2023 Tes SEND Show! Andy, Claire, Rachael and Katherine will be at Stand 83, amongst many SEND exhibitors.

There will be opportunities to take part in forums, workshops, CPD-certified seminars.

The exhibition is aimed at parents. carers and education professionals and entry is free (some seminars are chargeable).

Get involved

You can get involved in Dyslexia Awareness Week in a number of ways:

  • Fundraise for the charity, at school, at work or as an individual. You could do a bake sale, run a sponsored challenge, hold a mufti day, put on a quiz or hold a film night. There are more ideas here.
  • Encourage discussion about dyslexia in your workplace. You could even book a Lunch & Learn session.
  • If you work at school, why not book an in-service session about dyslexia awareness or join the Supporting Learners with Dyslexia course.
  • Take part in the events we put on during the week.

Lillian

Lillian on World Book Day

Lillian is a busy girl; she loves dancing and is part of an invitation-only dance crew, she loves fashion, designing useful objects (rainbow toilet roll holder anyone?) and making animated movies. Her dad thinks her amazing problem-solving abilities could make her a great engineer one day.

Lillian goes to a very tiny school in Oxfordshire – there are just two other children in her year and they both seem particularly good at reading. This is something Lillian struggles with, as well as with spelling, organisation and remembering things at school, so she and her mum Kirstie came to see us here at Helen Arkell.

Lillian’s assessment was a revelation. She’s in the top 1% for two particular skills and this and the other feedback she was given have elevated her self-confidence enormously.

This gave Lillian the boost she needed so when World Book Day came around in March, Lillian set to work to educate everyone at school about dyslexia. She didn’t read in assembly and she didn’t write a report; Lillian wrote all her newly-discovered facts on her school shirt in multi-coloured pens!

Lillian received so many lovely comments and encouragement wearing her decorated shirt to school. One mum, whose son has dyslexia but who is not ready to let everyone know yet, told Lillian that she was very proud of her and that she’d made her son feel better about being dyslexic. The school thanked Lillian for being so brave and so open about her dyslexia. Thanks to Lillian, lots of people at school now understand dyslexia better and Lillian is really happy that they know about it.

Writing to us at Helen Arkell, Lillian’s mum said, ‘I just wanted to share my proud moment with you. Lillian’s diagnosis has brought her a great deal of comfort in why she struggles and has allowed her to identify areas that there are easy solutions too. She has embraced lots of coping mechanisms and is a much happier little girl – thank you.’
